Mechanic Offers Safe Summer Driving Tips!
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports that the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is the most dangerous travel time of the year with an average of 13,000 Americans killed while on vacation. Many of these fatalities are directly related to neglected vehicle maintenance and auto repair. As a reminder from an experienced mechanic, take care of preventative vehicle maintenance and any needed auto repair as soon as possible. Don't wait for the problem to get bigger, or even worse, be the cause of an accident!
As you make plans for your summer road trip, make a safe automobile, combined with safe driving practices, a top priority. Start with a pre-trip inspection at a trustworthy auto shop a couple of weeks before your trip to give your mechanic time to take care of any required service or a possible auto repair. Don't compromise the safety of you, your passengers, or other motorists.
Before heading down the road, have the systems listed below inspected by a certified mechanic:
- Cooling: Have your A/C inspected to make sure you don't have any issues with your car overheating during the hot summer months.
- Braking: Make sure your car stops on command (when you step on the brake pedal). Make sure your brakes and rotors are in good condition before you hit the road.
- Emissions: Have leaks in your car's emission system fixed as soon as possible as they will cause a loud muffler and obnoxious fumes.
- Steering/suspension: Don't lose control! If the steering and suspension systems are in ill repair, you could easily lose control of your car.
- Engine / Fuel: You will need optimum power performance for passing or climbing steep roads. A poorly functioning fuel system adversely affects gas mileage and motor performance.
- Electrical and Ignition: Keep the battery charged. Make sure your car starts when you are ready to go.
If any of the above inspections indicate a problem, be sure to have the necessary auto repair taken care of by your reliable auto mechanic. You'll be glad you did and so will the 'other guy'.
