Take a little extra time to make sure your summer driving is as safe as possible. Before you head out on that long-awaited-for road trip, or even your daily commute, take the time to get a standard inspection service to make sure that your vehicle is up for the task of the hot weather and miles to come. This inspection should include checking all fluids (transmission, brakes, battery, power steering, radiator), oil change service, tire repair service to inspect tread depth and inflation pressure, braking system, and steering and suspension systems. It may be necessary to purchase new tires or take care of a needed auto repair.

Failure of your tires, while you're driving, can be hazardous--cause your car to go out of control or leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Here are a few tire service items you can check yourself frequently:

  • The depth of Tread: The tread should be at least 1/16 of an inch (1.6 millimeters) in depth. Consider purchasing new tires if you will be driving in rough road conditions.
  • Cracked Sidewalls – This could be a sign of a developing leak.
  • Bulges and Blisters – This is an indication that the outer surface of the tire has begun to weaken.
  • Excessive Vibration – This can be caused by tires being out of alignment or out of balance, failing shock absorbers, or an internal structure problem in the tire.

As much as you try to be prepared, the unexpected can happen. Have any necessary tire repair or other auto repairs performed before heading down the road. Carry a roadside emergency kit in the trunk, available at most retailers and auto part stores. Don't forget to add a couple of blankets, snacks, and water.
