Even though the price of fuel has decreased significantly in the last couple of months and people aren’t driving as many miles as they normally do, many drivers may still appreciate a few tips from their auto repair shop that will help them save money on auto repair services.

How can you save money on fuel and keep your car running efficiently? Consider these tips about auto repair services and driving habits:

  • Replace dirty air filters. A dirty and clogged air filter will cause an engine to work harder and make it less fuel efficient.
  • Regular oil changes. Follow the correct mileage interval for oil changes, using the right oil.
  • Check your tires. Make sure the tire pressure is correct and that the tread is still a good depth. Underinflated tires create more resistance, making your engine work harder, reducing fuel mileage and tire life.Save your tires by having them rotated about every six months.
  • Avoid idling. If you have to sit with your motor idling for more than a few minutes, turn it off.
  • Pay attention to your speed. Most highway speed limits are over 60 mph, although this will increase the amount of fuel your vehicle uses. However, try to maintain a steady speed (use your cruise control) and avoid unnecessary acceleration to help your fuel economy.
  • Use lower octane fuel.Use the lowest octane appropriate for your vehicle as the more costly premium doesn’t boost your fuel economy.
  • At the pump. Don’t “top off” as overfilling the gas tank wastes cash on gas you won’t use. Be sure to tighten the gas cap as a loose, missing, or damaged cap can cause you to lose up to 30 gallons per year through evaporation.
  • Routine tune ups. A misfiring spark plug reduces fuel efficiency significantly.
  • Lighten the load. Remove roof racks or bicycle racks when not being used, keep the trunk cleaned out, and keep the proper wheel alignment and balancing.
  • Fuel Injector cleaning service. This will restore engine performance; maximize fuel economy, and reducevehicle emissions.
  • Be serious about vehicle maintenance. For optimum operating performance, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommended vehicle maintenance for your vehicle
