This is a good question to ask if you are starting to notice problems, such as your car not starting when you turn the key in the ignition, your navigation system is not functioning properly, the headlights keep dimming. Even though a car battery may not seem like it's very important, most drivers know that a strong car battery is vital for the operation of your car. Don’t wait until you’re stranded somewhere on a cold winter day. There are a few warning signs you will notice if your car battery is about ready to die. Head to your auto shop for a car battery replacement if you notice any of the problems below.

How do you know if you have a bad car battery? Pay attention to these five warning signs:

  1. Accessories don’t work properly. A dying battery is not able to fully power your vehicle’s electrical components, which includes headlights, power windows and seats, door locks, navigation system, plus a lot more, depending on the “trim” level of your vehicle.
  2. Clicking sound when turning the key in the ignition. In a fully functioning vehicle, when the key is turned in the ignition (or the start button is pushed), an electrical current is sent to the starter solenoid. If your battery is going bad, the current is too weak to actually start the car, and you may hear just clicking noise.
  3. Slow Crank. If the engine does finally start after several tries, the battery may be almost dead and you should have it replaced.
  4. Stepping on the Accelerator. Most cars should start without having to step on the accelerator. However, if you have to rev up the motor to start your car, your car battery may be almost dead.
  5. Backfiring. Backfiring is generally associated with other problems than a bad car battery. But if your battery is going bad and only starts intermittently, fuel can accumulate in the cylinders, backfiring when it is ignited.

A word of advice: If your battery is going bad, a jumpstart will only keep it going for a little while. Head to your auto shop as soon as possible for a car battery replacement!
