Winter is over and spring is here. Your windshield wipers probably worked hard through the dark wet days of winter. It’s important that you take care of not only the big auto repair services, such as rotating the tires, flushing the transmission, or replacing the air filter, but it’s also important to take care of the often-overlooked small items, such as replacing the windshield wipers! Be ready for those sudden spring showers!

Windshield wipers can become a serious safety hazard if you are caught in a heavy rainstorm and discover that you can barely see. They may squeak, skip and leave streaks as they pass over the glass. Replacing windshield wipers should be considered a routine part of auto repair services for your vehicle.

Here are a couple of maintenance tips from an auto repair shop about windshield wipers:

  • Check the condition of your wipers by running your finger along the rubber edge. If it feels rigid or chipped or leaves streaks on the glass, it is time to replace them. Or if the wipers are less than six months old, clean the rubber edge with windshield washer fluid or mild dish soap. If this doesn’t fix the problem, replace them with better quality wipers and make sure they are installed properly. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper on a van or SUV.
  • The rubber on the wiper blades deteriorates over time. Even if you live in an area with very little rain, you may still need to replace your wipers about every six months.

When replacing your wipers, here are four guidelines:

  1. Purchase the entire wiper assemblies, not just the blades.
  2. Replace wipers in pairs as they both wear out at about the same rate.
  3. Buy the correct shape and size specified for your vehicle. Read your owner’s manual, or ask your auto repair technician for advice.
  4. Use good quality wipers. Paying for higher quality wipers may actually save you money as they will last a little longer than the cheaper brands.
