Been a victim of vandalism? Many auto shops report that a common cause of damage to car windows and doors is due to vandalism, especially as the holidays are approaching and more valuables are left in vehicles. Vehicle owners have to take time out of their busy schedule to look for a quick car repair. Most car service centers are more than willing to provide fast and efficient car repair for vehicle owners who have been a victim of vandalism.

6 tips to help prevent vandalism:

  • Keep valuables out of sight. Don't leave anything of great importance inside your car, whether in a parking lot or even your own garage.
  • Keep copies of your driver's license, bank and credit card(s), passport or any form of identification in a safe place at home.
  • Know what's in your wallet or purse, leaving a written list at home.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Always lock your car doors.
  • Use common sense and follow your intuition.
  • A law enforcement agency may be able to advise you on additional ways you can help prevent vandalism.

If you have been a victim of vandalism:

  • Contact your local police department to determine if a vandalism report needs to be filed.
  • For your safety, and to protect your vehicle from further vandalism, have the necessary car repair (such as windows, door or trunk locks) taken care of as soon as possible.
  • Consult your insurance company if there is damage to your vehicle or you have experienced loss of property.
  • If your wallet has been stolen, contact your bank to cancel any bank cards, credit cards and/or checks. Consider creating a fraud report with the three major credit agencies.
  • If your keys were stolen, you may want to change the locks on your home.
  • If your cell phone was stolen, contact your service provider and cancel your service.
