With the price of fuel escalating every day, on the rise, most drivers appreciate tips from their auto repair shop on how to increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. To help vehicle owners save money at the pump as well as save the environment, the tips below will increase fuel economy, as well as increase the lifespan of your vehicle:

  • Replace dirty air filters.  A dirty and clogged air filter will make your engine work harder, making it less fuel efficient.
  • Regular oil changes.  Change the oil and filter at the right mileage interval and be sure to use the type of oil recommended for your vehicle.
  • Avoid idling.  Turn off the motor if you have to wait for more than a few minutes in your car.
  • Observe your speed.  Avoid fast accelerations, maintain a steady speed and use cruise control when possible.
  • Use the octane level of fuel appropriate for your vehicle.  Using higher octane fuel than what is recommended for your vehicle only costs more money and doesn’t boost fuel economy..
  • Avoid “topping off.” Overfilling the gas tank only wastes money as the fuel will slop and seep off.
  • Tighten the gas cap.  If the gas cap is damaged or loose, about 30 gallons of gas (per year) can evaporate.
  • Correct tire pressure.  Underinflated tires create more resistance rolling down the road, causing your engine to work harder and wear out tires faster.
  • Schedule timely tune-ups. Bad spark plugs and other adjustments to a poorly running engine can be made to increase the performance of an engine.
  • Eliminate drag.  Remove roof racks or bicycle racks when not in use, remove excess weight from the trunk, and keep the wheels in alignment and tires balanced.
  • Fuel Injector cleaning service.  Clean fuel injectors improve engine performance, maximize fuel economy, and reduce toxic emissions.

A word of advice: Your auto repair shop wants to help keep your vehicle up-to-date on the needed auto repair services so that it keeps running at its optimum level of performance.
