Summer is here and many people are gearing up for that long-awaited-for summer road trip. Be sure to start your road trip right by staying up-to-date with your vehicle's maintenance schedules, especially quality engine service. Hot weather makes existing problems worse! Don't get stranded in a strange town during your summer vacation looking for an auto shop that can fit you in for an unexpected engine repair.

Follow this road map of good car care:

  1. Know the Recommended Service Intervals – Read your owner's manual to know the recommended service intervals. Make sure all maintenance items are up-to-date. If an engine service, oil change, or other service interval will become due during your road trip, take care of it before you head out.
  2. Tires – For smooth driving, make sure the tires have the correct air pressure, that the tread is sufficient for driving on hot roads, and that, if necessary, the tires are rotated. Remember to check the spare and be sure the jack is in the trunk.
  3. Windshield Wipers – Replace old wiper blades and make sure you have good windshield washer fluid on hand. Be prepared for a sudden summer rainstorm.
  4. Car Battery – Hot weather wreaks havoc on car batteries, so have the charging power checked, corrosion cleaned from the posts and cable connections, connections retightened, and the fluid level checked.
  5. Lights – Make sure all lights (outside and inside) are working and that the lenses are clean. The general rule of thumb is "lights on for safety!"
  6. Engine Service – Take care of any engine repair problems (such as hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) before they develop into bigger problems.
  7. Exhaust System – Make sure there are no exhaust leaks in the muffler, trunk, and floorboards. This keeps the air in your vehicle clean and safe, as well as helps prevent polluting the environment.
  8. Air Conditioner – Check the level and condition of the coolant. A flush and refill may be required. Don't forget to inspect the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses.
  9. Emergencies – Carry a first-aid kit, blanket, flares, energy snacks, water, and a cell phone.
