The cold days of winter have arrived in full force and many people are making trips for winter events. If you haven't taken time to have the appropriate automotive service performed earlier in the fall, don't delay in making an appointment to be sure your car can make it safely through the icy and snowy conditions. The right automotive service, performed at the appropriate intervals, can be literal lifesavers in harsh conditions. You could also save hundreds of dollars in car repair expenses later on.

Check the list of minimum automotive service issues below so that you can drive worry-free this winter:

  • Oil change (include the filter). Follow the right oil change interval for your vehicle. Have other fluids and filters (coolant, brake and transmission), checked and changed as needed. High-quality filters are recommended for colder temperatures.
  • Brakes. Worn and failing brakes can create havoc during icy and snowy conditions. Are the rotors warped or cracked with deep groves? Are the pads worn close to their minimum allowance? Schedule a car repair as soon as possible to take care of any braking problems.
  • Lights. Ensure good visibility by making sure all your lights (headlights, fog lights, running lights, brake lights, and blinkers) are working properly. New bulbs only cost a few dollars and are easy to install, either by you or during an automotive service. Check the cabin lights too so you are not entering a dark car.
  • Washer fluid. Fill the washer fluid reservoir with freeze resistant fluid. Also, if your windshield wiper blades are more than six months old, have them replaced for optimum visibility.
  • Tires. Have your tires rotated, inspected for excessive wear, and filled with the correct air pressure. Consider winter tires as they are made with special low-temperature resilient rubber compounds with deep treads to grip unplowed snow and ice. This compound remains pliable when temperatures dip low, retaining grip and keeping the car's safety systems (such as the all-wheel drive and anti-lock brakes) functioning properly. Make sure the spare is in good condition too.

The dollars spent on automotive service is money well spent for the safety of you and your passengers. An added bonus--your gas mileage will increase, and your vehicle will handle and stop better. Unexpected problems could still happen, but you will have peace of mind knowing that you have done all you could to drive safely.
