It may seem that some car service items seem unnecessary for the operation of your vehicle. This causes vehicle owners to ask the question, “Why are car repairs so expensive?” In addition to auto insurance, fuel, and basic oil changes, many drivers find it difficult to set aside a certain amount each month to spend on their maintenance and repairs. The fact is, to save money, you will have to spend money on regular car service at the recommended interval.

So why are car repairs so expensive, you ask?

  1. The cost of replacement car parts – the cost will depend largely on who makes them and where they come from.
  2. Replacing tires – although advanced technology means that tires will last longer, the prices are still high for good quality tires.
  3. Brake replacement – don’t wait until your brake pads are so thin that it causes damage to the rotors, making the cost of a brake replacement even more expensive.
  4. Replace fluids – the cost of oil changes is relatively low, but it should be done between every three to six months. Coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, etc., will need to be flushed and replaced periodically. Otherwise, you could be paying out thousands of dollars to repair a damaged engine or transmission instead of a few hundred dollars or less.
  5. Safety Systems – new features such as blind-spot monitoring or lane changing sensors not only add to the price of the car but also the cost of needed repair is much higher.
  6. New Technology – Touch screens and auto braking are new features that add to the price of the car, which also means higher maintenance costs.
  7. New Materials being used – Cars are now being made out of materials, such as using aluminum instead of steel, that make them more fuel-efficient. Bit, pre costly.
  8. Bodywork and paint – You may have to end up having bodywork, such as fixing a bent fender or re-painting a panel to keep your car looking brand-new!.

There are several factors that will actually determine the amount you spend on basic car service, such as the make and model of your vehicle, its age, how many miles you drive each year, and your driving habits.
