I haven't driven 3,000 miles yet, but the window sticker says I'm due for an oil change. What should I do? Just because an annoying window sticker may be blaring in your face, this should not give you any anxiety or stress, or place undue pressure to have an oil change. Although there is an abundance of oil change coupons and the "quickie" oil change establishments on every corner, holding out for the 3,000 miles is not going to harm your vehicle. The date of the sticker is just an estimate of when the 3,000 miles would come to pass.

What the debate about?

The recommended 3,000-mile oil change interval is debatable. Most auto mechanics will tell you that even 5,000 miles between oil changes is not a problem. In the last twenty years, there has been a lot of improvements, both in engines and the quality of oil. However, for some reason, a lot of manufacturers have retained the old 3,000-mile oil change recommendation. The sticker on your windshield is a simple reminder to keep your vehicle serviced.  But remember that it is important that when you have oil changes on a regular basis, it gives your auto service center an opportunity to check other mechanical components of your vehicle. This is not just another opportunity for them to perform unnecessary and costly repairs. It's your opportunity to make sure your vehicle is inspected and kept up-to-date for needed maintenance or repairs.

So, to answer the questions above, unless you suspect your vehicle may require some other type of service or repair, it generally will not harm your vehicle to wait out the recommended 3,000-mile interval before taking it in for the next oil change.
