To get ready for summer’s hot temperatures, a smart driver should schedule a maintenance service, formerly called a car tune up, for an inspection of the engine, to analyze their vehicle’s overall performance, and to have any necessary adjustments made to the operating systems. This “tune up” checklist should include both preventative and restorative engine assessments.

Here are a few facts that will help you understand what an auto shop means when it offers a tune up special:
- Mileage-based services suit today's cars better. A generic tune up isn't necessarily in tune with your car's service needs. Instead, follow the list of service checks in your owner's manual set at your car's mileage milestones.
- Today's cars are designed to last longer as long as the manufacturer's recommended car maintenance schedule is followed.
- A check-engine light does not mean your car needs a tune up. The check-engine light is activated when the car computer finds a problem with one of many components, not necessarily those related to emissions or engine performance.
- A failed emissions test also doesn’t mean your car needs a tune up. A sluggish or failing O2 sensor causes gas mileage to decline and can affect emissions. Have the mechanic check its effectiveness with a scanner.
- The vehicle maintenance service schedule is often referred to as a tune up. The type of service closest to the tune up is the major service listed in your owner’s manual that is typically recommended about every two years or 30,000 miles.
