Electric and hybrid cars may require some special care, but typically they have proven to be a reliable vehicle that can go many years without needing any serious maintenance.  Of course, don’t forget to have the basic oil change and other preventative maintenance performed at the appropriate intervals.  As hybrids don’t require service quite as frequently as their gas counterparts, be sure to check your owner’s manual or ask your hybrid vehicle specialist for the recommended service schedule.

  • Oil Changes

Hybrids have the components of a regular gas engine along with their electric aspects, so they require the same routine maintenance as gas vehicles. This includes oil changes and new filters at certain intervals. However, because the electric side of the car takes some load off the engine, the oil doesn’t need to be changed in a hybrid at the same interval as its pure gas counterpart. Typically, a hybrid car can go between 5,000 and 10,000 miles between oil changes, and the air filter changed approximately every 40,000 miles.

  • Routine Check-Up Schedule

With the exception of oil and brakes, all other engine maintenance is much like that for any other car.  Like oil changes, brake pads of a hybrid car need to be changed less frequently. This is because of the regenerative braking properties of these cars.  Take your hybrid car to a certified hybrid technician for regular, routine check-ups.  They will help you keep a record of what repairs have been done as well as note any changes or situations that arise. This is the best way to diagnose problems early and maintain your car to help avoid costly repairs down the road.

A word to the wise:  If you need to have an oil change or other preventative maintenance performed on your hybrid vehicle, be sure to take it to a certified hybrid vehicle technician, as they are specifically trained to work on hybrids.
