Even though a car battery seems to be a fairly small and simple component, it is critical to the performance of your vehicle. Therefore, to understand the "why" and the "how" of a car battery is important as you may be wondering why your vehicle requires a car battery replacement even though you have faithfully taken care of it!

To define it in easy-to-understand terms, a car battery is a device that produces electrical energy by way of an electro-chemical reaction within the interior. For obvious safety reasons, the battery itself is contained within an acid-proof container. The two substances that produce the electro-chemical reaction are found in metal plates that physically hang in the acid solution. One set of the plates acts as the positive terminal and the other set of plates acts as a negative terminal. This chemical reaction causes electricity to flow inside the battery.

As the current produced by the car battery is consumed by the vehicle's electrical system, the plates are slowly depleted by the repeated chemical reaction. This chemical reaction continues to create more electricity. If the electrical current is not replenished, the car battery will no longer be capable of supplying the power necessary to operate the various components of the electrical system. This is where the alternator system, or more commonly known as the charging system, performs its job. The process of recharging reverses the effect of the chemical process that has taken place by reversing the flow of current and charging up the internal plates. This in turn restores full electrical current from the car battery to the vehicle's electrical components.

In order for a car battery to function correctly, it must be in good condition internally, working together with the connections that feed the current to the electrical components. However, if your vehicle's electrical system isn't functioning properly or inoperable altogether, but the alternator is still working properly, more than likely a car battery replacement is required.
